“Act now to save our children from their electronic devices” - Mrs MacGinty writes in The Times
"Sajid Javid, the home secretary, said yesterday that it was his “personal mission” to tackle the shocking scale of online child sexual abuse after the National Crime Agency reported a 700 per cent increase in referrals for child abuse images over the past five years. This statistic follows a Children’s Society report which revealed that nearly a quarter of 14-year-old girls said they had self-harmed over the previous 12 months.
Some claimed this figure was due in part to a lack of adolescent psychiatrists. But prevention is always better than cure so would it not be better to concentrate finite resources on programmes within schools and communities to build children’s resilience and address issues before they become a problem?
