International Curriculum

For international students, English is an essential subject in terms of unlocking the whole curriculum and making the most of living in a different country.

At Kilgraston School, we accept international boarders from 8 years old. All international students at Kilgraston receive between 3 and 5 hours of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) lessons per week. At all ages, ESOL lessons are tailored to a pupil’s ability and we focus on improving language skills in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, whilst simultaneously strengthening grammatical knowledge and building vocabulary.

In Upper Sixth (Year 13) students follow the International English Language Testing (IELTS) course. This focuses on academic English in order to fully prepare students for university education in an English-speaking country. IELTS is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for Higher Education and global migration, with over 2 million tests taken in the last year. At Kilgraston, students can sit the examination at three points in the year: December, March and June.

In all other year groups, students follow a suitable Cambridge English course depending on their level of English. These courses cover essential skills, vocabulary and grammar and students will have the opportunity to sit one of the following Cambridge English examinations during the year:

  • Cambridge: Advanced (CAE
  • Cambridge: First (FCE)
  • Cambridge: Preliminary (PET)
  • Cambridge: Key (KET)
