Increased freedom and independence coupled with greater self-responsibility for their own life and work are key features in the progression of Kilgraston’s Sixth Formers through to university. Guided by experienced staff, each student will be making crucial decisions which will help to shape their futures.
There is a broad range of subject options available for students in the Sixth Form, who are given generous individual attention to ensure that they are able to achieve their own goals. Girls will become accustomed to the increased pace and intensity of life and work in the Sixth Form which is accompanied by a new confidence and maturity. Staff work closely with all of the girls to help them explore, consider and make decisions about further education, university degree and career opportunities and ensure that advice is always available. The girls are encouraged to supplement their studies with an array of extra-curricular activities.
The recently opened built Sixth Form Centre provides the girls with spacious, comfortable surroundings in which to focus on their study either on their own or as part of a group.
Our emphasis is on fostering a ‘can do’ mentality so that when the time comes to move on from Kilgraston, each girl does so with independence, a genuine confidence in her abilities and a vision for the future.
Studies
The Sixth Form at Kilgraston is the culmination of a pupil’s school career. Pupils can enjoy two years of studying their chosen subjects, learning to organise their work and leisure time, pursuing their interests and planning their futures. They are being encouraged to develop independence together with a sense of responsibility and growing self-confidence. In this way, the Sixth Form is an excellent foundation for the complete independence demanded by University education.
Pupils in the Sixth Form take four or five Highers in L6 (S5). In the U6 (S6) the girls will then take Advanced Highers or new subjects at Higher. There is a wide range of subjects on offer, and each student will be encouraged to supplement their choices from an array of extra-curricular activities.
Kilgraston Sixth Formers continue to achieve exceptional exam results. In 2013 pupils secured places at top Scottish, UK and International universities, including Edinburgh, St Andrew’s, Waterloo University in Canada and Oxford, with more aspiring to Oxbridge in the coming years.
Sixth Form Centre
The newly opened Sixth Form Centre provides both Lower and Upper Sixth (S5 and S6) with quiet and spacious surroundings of their own in which to study.
Day girls have their own desk areas, which they can use as a base for all of their books and coursework and both boarders and day girls alike use the communal table space for group work.
The individual carrels provide the girls with a university library atmosphere and the kind of learning environment that they will be acquainted with as undergraduate students at university. Girls can have discussions about their work without directly impacting the private study of other students; the girls have privacy whilst still benefiting from working together.
“The centre has definitely helped with our work this term…being in an area that has only ever signified a working environment has seemed to have an impact.” Zara Collings, U6.
“The sense of ownership by having individual desks gives everyone their own space to ponder over the weeks work. We definitely feel a sense of attachment to the area and take great pride in having this room to ourselves.” Hannah Reynolds, U6.
