DSC_3373-2The Middle School is for girls between the ages of 13 and 16 years, after which they will progress into the Sixth Form.

Kilgraston’s responsibility is to enable every pupil to achieve her potential. By helping to develop intellectually, Kilgraston girls are taught to use their talents and to attain their personal best. The excellent, experienced staff and support for learning ensure that each girl is encouraged to achieve.

The curriculum

Kilgraston offers the Scottish curriculum leading to Nationals, Highers and Advanced Highers. This offers breadth at National and Higher level and depth at Advanced Higher. The Scottish Examination system is highly regarded by universities and in 2013 university placements included Russell Group universities, St Andrew’s, the University of Waterloo in Canada and Oxford, with more girls aspiring to Oxbridge next year.

The Middle School curriculum is based on Curriculum for Excellence but departments would expect to teach beyond the outlined curriculum by U4 (S2/Y9). Upper Fourth pupils study a broad general education which includes the opportunity to study two modern foreign languages French and Spanish or German as well as a full range of Science, Humanities and Arts courses.

In the Fifth Forms (S3/S4) the majority of girls take eight or nine Nationals. Mathematics, English and RE are core subjects. Pupils then choose six options from a wide range of subjects.

The School Day

A normal school day at Kilgraston starts with registration at 8.45am followed at 8.55 by an inter-denominational morning assembly for all girls in the Senior School and Sixth Form which takes place in the School Chapel.

Teaching commences at 9.05am and with six periods running through until 4.10pm.

All of the girls have a common 50 minute lunch break at 1.05pm with a break mid-morning.

Optional co-curricular activities (compulsory for boarders) take place between 4.30pm and 5.30pm and again between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. Although optional for Day Pupils, we consider co-curricular activity to be an important and integral part of school life and encourage everyone to take part in at least one activity per week.
