Update March 12 2020
We continue to monitor guidance from UK Government and educational bodies such that as the situation evolves across Europe and the wider world we will also evolve the School’s arrangements. Below is our current view on cautionary measures being applied in respect of travel returning from Europe.
Our position with regards those returning from Italy remain largely unchanged from our communication of last week.
In the above situations, if the individual who has travelled or those who have been in contact with the traveller test negative for the virus then a return to school can happen immediately.
Rest of Europe
As the number of confirmed cases increases throughout Europe, and in particular in Germany, France and Spain, we will deal with each returning traveller (or persons connected with returning travellers) on a case by case basis.
We will request self-isolation on the initial return from travel (or contact with travellers) in order to fully ascertain the movements of the travel in relation to affected zones or territories. The isolation will be kept to a minimum where the risks are deemed low but the School will request continued self-isolation for two weeks if the risks of potential infection are higher or unknown.
We will follow the guidelines on the categorisation of these countries and if they escalate to Category 2 (i.e. as with Italy) then we will apply the principles described above for Italy.
Further to our previous communication we are requesting all staff, pupils, parents and guardians to declare all travel plans especially with the approach of the Easter holiday. This includes, for example, parental travel where the parents will then have contact with their daughter(s) within 2 weeks of that travel. Please contact the Finance Department (firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as possible and request a travel declaration document.
We are also working with Education Scotland and the Scottish Government who are collating data to better understand the scale and scope of travel in the Scottish Independent Schools Sector.
Isolation in school
As Kilgraston is a boarding school, there are many accommodations throughout our premises that can be adapted for the conditions required for self-isolation. We have nominated dedicated staff to be involved with the care of anyone who is self-isolating on school premises. Details will be provided on a case by case basis as necessary.
Planning for a case of COVID-19 in school / school closure
We continue to reinforce with all staff and pupils essential hygiene and hand-washing practice as a preventative measure. In the unlikely event that a case of the virus occurs in school, Kilgraston has a clear plan for isolation, containment and reporting following Scottish and UK Government best practice.
At the time of writing, there are only 23 confirmed cases in Scotland with the Tayside Health Board confirming only one and there is currently no recommendation in Scotland for school closures. However this advice remains under review and as such our Senior Leadership Team are working with our residential and catering teams to prepare a contingency plan for boarders and with our teaching staff and ICT on remote learning.
We will continue to update parents and the wider school community as appropriate but if you have any concerns you would like to discuss with the school, please contact:
Mrs Muller, Head of Pastoral and Boarding
Mrs Mackie, Head of Finance
As always, our foremost priority continues to be the safety and wellbeing of our whole school community, and we will continue to monitor the situation. However, please get in touch if you have any questions on this matter.
